Better teaching facilities for Royal Derby Hospital

Saville was awarded the contract to refurbish and upgrade the audio visual systems in the main Education Centre lecture theatre at Royal Derby Hospital.

The Client

Royal Derby Hospital is the largest teaching hospital in the East Midlands and one of the largest hospitals in the UK. It is a major teaching centre for the University of Nottingham medical school.

The Brief

The challenge facing the Saville team was a complex and outdated legacy AV system which was fully analogue, with 4:3 aspect ratio displays and without any HD components.

Lacking HDMI inputs or BYOD capability, the system needed to be easier to control, with brighter screen images and better placed repeater screens.

The Solution

Key elements of the improved facilities include the installation of an AMX control system and a 6600 lumens Christie HD projector. Zoned DSP digital audio and a versatile Barco ClickShare wireless collaboration package complete the system.

A Kramer switcher scaler enables multiple input sources to be delivered to the main screen at the correct format and resolution. Repeater displays use the switcher’s HDBaseT output.

Audio reproduction is a vitally important factor, so a high performance DSP system is configured, incorporating separate programme sound and PA audio amplifiers.

A unique beyerdynamic array microphone provides superior coverage for lectern presentations.

Audio support for students with hearing difficulties is addressed with an upgrade to the existing audio loop amplifier.

The Outcome

Lectures and presentations in 16:9 format can now be controlled from a new, bespoke Academy lectern via the AMX Modero-X touch screen.

This contemporary installation by Saville Audio Visual has provided a much needed, professional lecture suite with HD capabilities and vastly improved audio facilities; the use of ClickShare as a means of sharing multiple sources simultaneously has transformed the space into a truly connected, high-end experience.
