New Park Chambers

Convene helps connect Chambers

New Park Chambers

New Park Court Chambers is a large and well-established set of Chambers comprising of 69 barristers in Leeds and Newcastle, including 10 QCs. Major criminal, regulatory, civil and family cases together with complex medical negligence and health and safety prosecutions are all undertaken as part of the daily work of the barristers, in addition to inquests, judicial review and cases involving human rights issues.

With such a diverse range of cases plus the teams being split across two locations, the need for flexible and reliable video communications was paramount to achieving a more agile way of working. Saville were tasked with providing a modern solution to the existing legacy Tandberg 500 VC system.

A new Polycom Group 500 system was installed in each office offering high-quality point to point conferencing facilities. The boardroom facility is also used regularly within the chambers for group training sessions and seminars up to 25 people, allowing staff in Newcastle to take part easily without the need for travel.

A Saville Convene six seat virtual meeting service was a central part of the solution. This has found great favour amongst the Barristers who regularly join internal committee meetings from home following a scheduled email invite from Reception Manager Carol Arundel.

The Barristers are extremely impressed with the system especially the reliability and the ease of use. There has been universal adoption throughout the business and this has led to raised efficiency as a result of drastically reduced travel requirements. The saving in travelling time means that Barristers are able to deal with more appointments per day thereby increasing productivity. This in turn saves on legal costs by reducing time consuming, expensive travel.

It helped to experience the Convene service before we ordered it. Saville set up exactly what we needed for a proof of concept trial, free of charge and with no commitment.

Prisons, Courts and the CPS primarily still use ISDN for their VC connectivity, which has caused problems in the past when bridging calls with modern IP based VC systems. Using Convene to bridge the new IP based system with the legacy systems ensures connectivity to most organisations at any location. Security and confidentiality is paramount and Convene provides AES encryption capabilities which allows the VC systems to be secured behind firewalls, protected from public view and possible hacking. This arrangement also provides extra flexibility with the opportunity to hold multi-party calls as well as providing multi-platform mobile connectivity - even for those with no VC facilities.

The facility is available as part of the service for clients of Chambers. In addition, any solicitor or professional body requiring video conferencing (independently of Chambers) can hire the facilities for a pre-arranged fee.
