Saville creates realistic trading floor simulation

At Coventry University, Saville has installed a brand new, state-of-the-art trading floor, one of the biggest academic simulated trading floors in Europe.

The Client

Coventry University has a long tradition in business education, with successful graduates in high profile positions worldwide. Coventry Business School is one of the largest Business Schools in Europe and one of only a few in the UK accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

The Brief

To enhance opportunities for hands-on trading experience available to business students, the university decided to invest in a realistic, state-of-the-art Trading Floor. This incorporates the best analytical news and data platforms, including Bloomberg, Reuters, Datastream and Bankscope.

The Solution

Saville regional technical manager, Rob Hill said: “At opposite ends of the teaching area, we commissioned two videowall displays, one incorporating six NEC 55” Multisync screens and the other with four similar screens. These are designed for 24/7 operation and complemented by 46” NEC repeater screens along the side walls”.

“The system is programmed and controlled via an AMX Netlinx controller, with HDMI signal distribution and multiple HDBaseT outputs. We installed other components, including a dual output Cayin digital signage package and bespoke full-colour ticker displays. Real-time share information is shown on a 6m ticker display in the room and a 12m display outside.”

The Outcome

Since installation, the Financial Trading Society at the university has been making full and regular use of the trading floor and the Finance Lab simulation has proved invaluable. According to the society’s website, Finance Lab enables students to test their skills and knowledge in a simulated marketplace without the risk of losing money. This provides a key learning experience and hands-on knowledge that would otherwise be hard to come by.

The simulation allows for a whole range of custom settings and set-ups, including varying the difficulty level, which allows the society to adapt its trading simulations for its members.  The detailed game reports allow members to see their trades and portfolio value over the trading sessions, enabling them to self-evaluate and measure their progress against their peers.”
