How we helped Bury College embrace green AV technology

With over 5000 full-time students and 600 staff, Bury College is one of the UK’s outstanding centres of excellence in the FE sector. With results consistently above the national average, the college has recently invested over £40 million, including a substantial commitment to the latest AV technologies. The main focus was on real energy savings and interactive, environmentally friendly teaching systems.

As a specialist supplier, Saville Audio Visual was asked to advise on the viability of a projection installation using the prominent glass stairwell. Our solution for the stairwell involved bespoke bracketry and custom-made ‘window screens’, a prelude to proposals for the college’s wider AV requirements. The result is an extraordinary project, one of the largest educational installations undertaken by Saville.

The college has been impressed with their professional approach… They have provided solutions which not only enhance the learning experience… but also allow the College to embrace new technologies in a cost-effective way.

Keith Platts, Bury College Executive Director Resources for Learning

Venture Building - The Stairwell

The installation involved an 11 metre drop, so specific safety reassurances were required, including engineers being roped for safety. Perspex sheets were secured inside the windows and the stairwell is fully visible when images are not being projected.  A geometric correction feature ‘bends’ the images into the corner from an acute angle.

Venture Building - Classrooms & Conference Room

The original plan for interactive boards and LCD projectors was changed to 65” Philips interactive screens plus AMX Apollo hard-wired control panels. The screens use only 308W compared with over 500W for an interactive board and projector, giving energy savings of more than £30k over 5 years. Bespoke pedestal mounts were supplied, including rise and fall versions. A detailed spec and CAD drawing was produced for every room.

Conference Room

An integrated AV system was installed, with two 65” Philips HD touch screens on bolt-down mounts plus a custom-built credenza and matching lectern.

Millennium Centre / Woodbury Centre

Here Casio LED/laser projectors were installed throughout – with no lamps to replace and low power consumption. The completed rooms were physically checked and signed off in batches each week.

Beacon Centre – Arts & Childcare

Spending £750K pa on transporting SEN pupils to other specialist facilities, the college decided to invest in a permanent in-house facility. SensoryPod provides a safe, immersive learning environment with two projectors, interactive software and an interactive touch screen, controlled from an iPad.

On-going Projects

A further 27 new classrooms were fitted with Philips 65” screens and SMART Boards, with a Construction Skills Centre and five new science labs also equipped with Philips screens.

Staff comments

Many compliments have been received about the punctuality, tidy work, cleanliness, appearance and good manners of the installation teams, plus the consistent quality of their work. The college was particularly impressed with the company’s decision to store equipment in a container and use a tail-lift van to move materials around the site.
