A pioneering investment in digital technology

3M Buckley innovation centre

Funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Kirklees Council and the University of Huddersfield, the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre is designed to provide a growth hub for high-tech, high-growth SME’s – with meeting rooms and conference spaces catering for up to 100 delegates. The Centre was able to invest more than £500,000 from its ERDF funding in audio visual technology to create the pioneering new business centre attached to the University. The Centre has strong links to the 3M Corporation.

The key challenge was choosing the right specialist partner to undertake the enormous project. They chose the experience and innovation of Saville Audio Visual and this decision means that state-of-the-art technology is now helping the region’s businesses to connect with the world. The facilities at the Centre are intended for use by all businesses including tenants, non-resident members of 3M BIC Network and others in the region and the Saville team duly created a range of flexible solutions to meet the requirements of each room.

As a regional flagship centre for innovation, all meeting rooms and conference spaces are fitted out with the latest AV technology, including touch screen monitors allowing easy navigation through presentations, plus five Barco Clickshare systems enabling participants to share content wirelessly from their laptops and other mobile devices via high definition screens in the rooms.

Opportunities to engage with businesses from overseas benefit from access to a world leading telepresence facility in the boardroom. Installed in bespoke veneered wall with a matching table built by Saville, this enables them to communicate with international associates without the need to travel – saving costs on travel whilst promoting faster decision making and project development.

The clarity and height of the screens in the telepresence system gives the impression of everyone being together in the same room. It also allows simultaneous directional speech, which normal videoconferencing usually can’t cope with. This is ideal, particularly if the line needs to be clear due to the technical complexity of discussions.

For larger events at the Centre, the Presentation Suite and Exhibition Space offer full HD projection systems, with 7000 lumen Christie projectors and a three-metre wide screen. Two wall-mounted HD 42” repeater screens allow those at the back of the room to see the main presentation clearly, supported by a high performance audio system with radio microphones.

Collaboration is a key element to the ethos of the project, with tenants engaging in regular presentations and networking sessions. “We promote and encourage the use of these meeting rooms and the equipment that Saville has installed to promote a collaborative nature,” explained Centre Chief Executive, Liz Towns-Andrews.
